6 Ways to Practice Self Love

It’s February and that means Valentine’s Day is just around the corner. Stores are filled with heart shaped boxes of chocolate, restaurant reservations at the best spots are booking up, romance movies are on every channel and flower stands selling red roses have popped up on every corner. It’s inevitable – love is in the air.

Whether you are coupled up this Valentine’s Day or flying solo, one thing you can do regardless is to show yourself some self-love. You can and you should! By taking the time to take good care of yourself, it allows you to be light and happy, which attracts positive things into your life. Also, because you are simply wonderful and you deserve a little pampering every now and again. The best part? It doesn’t have to be anything fancy or expensive. In fact, it’s actually better if it isn’t. Keep it simple. Make it all about giving yourself time, attention and love which are some of the very best things in this world that can’t be bought.

To get you started on showing yourself some love, here are 6 ideas for self love that will cost you (almost) nothing:

1. Have a Warm Bath with Epsom Salts

Is there anything more relaxing then sinking into a nice, hot bath? All of your troubles seem to instantly melt away. To enhance your relaxation, you can try adding Epsom Salts and lavender essential oils to the mix. Epsom Salts are high in magnesium, a mineral that promotes relaxation and deep rest. Lavender oil is the queen of soothing aromatherapy blends. Combine the two and you may never want to leave the tub.

2. Make Some Dark Chocolate Fondue

Whenever I am craving a treat, dark chocolate is my go to. Anything greater than 70% cocoa usually doesn’t contain milk and as you get to higher percentages like 90% cocoa, added sugar is minimal. Rule of thumb: the darker the chocolate, the better it is for you! As an extra special indulgence, try melting it down on the stovetop, adding a little bit of coconut milk to keep it from hardening as it cools. That way, you can dip your favorite fruits in the chocolatey goodness. My favorites are strawberries, raspberries, and pineapples.

3. Do a Restorative Yoga Practice

Being a yogi, I could never get through a self love list without including a yoga practice. Yoga is such a great way to connect to your body. It allows you to focus on the breath while giving your body what it needs, whether that be some delicious movement or some active rest. I recommend slowing it down and giving yourself a gentle practice with some heart openers. Be on your mat, breath, and do what feels good for your body.

4. Write in Your Journal

Journaling can be incredibly therapeutic. It allows you to put it all out there in a safe place that is just for you. To practice self love through journaling, try the following. Write down 3 things that you love about your body, 3 things that you love about your personality, 3 things that you are proud of yourself for, 3 times you have reached goals, 3 times you have failed and why it has made you stronger, 3 things you are reaching for and 3 things you are grateful for in your life right now. By letting your pen flow, you allow yourself to capture your hearts deepest intentions and desires.

5. Meditate

Taking the time to stop and look inwards, especially in our busy world, is a crucial act of self love. Is meditation difficult? Yes. It’s not something that you will learn to do overnight. Start by committing to sitting in stillness. Focus on the breath and if thoughts come up, don’t judge. Simply observe the thought and let it go. You can try a mantra meditation where you inhale while thinking “I am” and exhale while silently repeating a self love mantra to yourself. This will bring your attention to your breath and start to bring stillness to the mind. It can be anything that resonates with you but if you are in need of some inspiration, try *inhale* “I am” *exhale* “completely in love with my beautiful self”. 6. Look Yourself in those Eyes

Have you ever heard the expression that the eyes are the gateway to the soul? It’s true. We look in the mirror multiple times each day but do you ever stop to truly look into your eyes? Try standing in front of the mirror and stare at your eyes for 30 seconds. Does anything come up? Any feelings or emotions? Acknowledge them. Then spend the next 30 seconds repeating a mantra to yourself: “You are beautiful, you are perfectly imperfect and I love you”.
